About this deal
This story reminds me a bit of Romeo and Juliet, and the film adaptation of Gnomeo and Juliet as they all focus on a forbidden love based on family views. The jargon and rhymes also massively lend themselves to phonics work - especially when looking at nonsense/alien words!

Maar o wee, die familie…… Dit dwing Fleur en Fanie om ‘n plan te beraam om hulle families anders te oortuig.
Two young aliens from warring families fall in love and run away, leading their relatives on a chase across outer space. I think I read somewhere that this is like a modern-day Seuss and that seems so appropriate because of the wonderfully nonsensical but great rhyme, and the odd and outlandish characters. Because this story is set in imaginary space I could have fun making up the names of all the different planets, like Lurglestrop and Klaboo. A story about accepting others despite their differences - a subtle political message in this book especially with the dedication to all the children in Europe.

He moved to England in 1982 to study illustration at the Bath Academy of Art, and then set up home in London. Bill pressed the button, and Janet steered… // …When their families woke, they had both disappeared! It shows generational differences and views, demonstrating how the views of the younger generation are important and can help to open older generations to changing their views and beliefs.

This means that children are able to watch the decoding of alien words, modelled by a reader, or are able to practise decoding them themselves within a fun and memorable story, giving their work at school on alien words meaning and excitement. I grew up in a tall Victorian London house with my parents, grandmother, aunt, uncle, younger sister Mary and cat Geoffrey (who was really a prince in disguise.
The narrator is a white brunette who wears either a tunic or a dress each day, making her pretty easy to differentiate from her classmates, a nice mix in terms of race; two students even sport glasses. And, just in case any adults missed the subtle Brexit theme, the book is dedicated to the children of Europe!

blue world and for little ones who have no understanding of politics and no idea why everyone is so angry at each other it must be quite scary. Soar into space with this glorious love story of alien folk, from the creators of The Gruffalo and Stick Man . Moreover, the notion that interracial couples and mixed-race offspring—a purple Smed/Smoo baby—are a solution for racism is false and places an unfair burden on mixed-race readers. Meeting by accident in the Wurpular Wood, Janet and Bill delight in each other’s company until their grandparents find out and drag them away. Look at the other plants and creatures in the illustrations and think about how they might be adapted to living on the alien planet.
He dislikes being different despite his mom’s reassurance that his ancestors also had unconventional appearances. He was the illustrator for Julia Donaldson's first picture book, A Squash and a Squeeze - the start of a hugely successful partnership. I also liked the inter text references to the gruffalo through the illustration, I always enjoy finding them.
