About this deal

This is a measured, nuanced book where things are not quite what they seem and even a seemingly ordinary beetle that appears over the course of the novel from time to time can have a meaning and purpose to it. I think this book is well suited to upper KS2 children as the two boys in the story are roughly ten years old and year five and six children would be easily able to relate to them. Friend or Foe tells the story of David and Tucky, as they are evacuated to Exeter from Blitz torn London during the Second World War. During a night of bombing David and he’s friend Tucky discover a German bomber has crash landed in the moors, the pair are both morally conflicted if they should helping the airman. I thought that friend or foe was a interesting,adventurous and amazing because when i read it it made me feel interested and and adventurous. Between lending a hand on the farm and attending the one-classroom village school, they spend their days exploring the fields and woods of the area, and thoroughly enjoying themselves.

Many years later after the war, the two men visit the city which was at war, now it is quiet and peaceful again. Michael Morpurgo has written more than forty books and won the Whitbread Award, the Smarties Award, the Circle of Gold Award, the Children’s Book Award and has been shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal four times.

I really do think that I now have a new favourite author, Canadian or otherwise, to champion, and I hope that there’s more like this one in the author’s book writing pipeline. There was nothing threatening or frightening about them, they were just two exhausted, pale-looking men with sad eyes and kind faces.
