Description

With remarkable elan, O’Connor conjures a spine-tingling vision of an unquiet maternal spirit who seems to sweep in with the wind to possess her daughter. While Charlotte is set to be a teacher, Emily (known in the village as “the strange one”) romps across moorland, caressing trees and moss, rolling and falling in green with her beloved Byronic brother Branwell (Fionn Whitehead). Both Alwyn and Beecham left the project prior to the start of filming in April 2021, with Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Alexandra Dowling, Amelia Gething, Gemma Jones and Adrian Dunbar joining the cast.

She depicts Charlotte (Alexandra Dowling) as a loving sister but one whose affection can often verge on patronizing. It’s an ugly book,” Charlotte complains as her sister Emily ( Sex Education’s Emma Mackey) swoons beside her, a three-volume edition of the offending text (“full of selfish people who only really care for themselves”) propped next to a medicine bottle at her elbow. You can watch the trailer below where we see Emily's rebellious lifestyle begin to unfold and the criticism she faces from her own family. It’s also a confident directorial debut for O’Connor, a veteran actor who starred in Patricia Rozema’s Mansfield Park and the BBC’s Madame Bovary, and in turn makes a period piece stripped of the pageantry and stateliness typical of the genre.

Abel Korzeniowski’s score ramps up the gothic romance and adds a note of thunderous horror to otherwise demure scenes of cloistered walls closing in. They are eventually caught, but when Emily denies her involvement, Branwell is sent to work for the family as a tutor as punishment. demands a rattled Charlotte Brontë (Alexandra Dowling) in the opening moments of this inventive, urgent gothic fable that, like Andrew Dominik’s misunderstood Blonde, could hardly be mistaken for a drearily factual biopic.

Emily is one of many upcoming biopics released this year, with music legend Elvis Presley resurrected for Baz Luhrmann's Elvis and Ana de Armas taking on the role of Hollywood superstar and blonde bombshell Marilyn Monroe for Netflix's Blonde. Mark Kermode describes Emily as a "full-blooded gothic fable", praising O’Connor's "spine-tingling feature debut".With breathtaking performances and stunning visuals, this film offers a powerful and emotional portrayal of Emily Bronte's life and the timeless legacy she left behind.
