At first, Rose is a bit timid and has trouble expressing her emotions. Yet, as the story goes on, she feels more comfortable in her skin and grows into her own. Ella Maise has this amazing ability to create a blend of show and tell with certain scenes. She’ll tell us about something they did but then will add a dialogue in there too which makes it so easy to imagine what that scene looked like. Marriage for One was a long book with a lot of little plot twists. It wasn’t what I expected at all. It wasn’t like any of the books I have read by Ella Maise. That’s not a bad thing. I feel like I can see how her writing is evolving, her craft getting stronger and maturing. What surprised me about this book was somber tone throughout the story. There were a lot of ups and downs, but things felt surprisingly even and sullen throughout the book. It’s really hard to explain, but it wasn’t a bad thing. I liked it. In addition to her standalone novels, Maise has also written a series of interconnected books called the “Love Unexpected” series, which follow the lives of a group of friends and their romantic relationships.a Meeting House if one or both partners are either members of the Society of Friends (Quakers) or are associated with the Society by attending meetings Plus, the author does a great job of burying the lead. You can’t predict most of the events before they happen. There are a few tropes and themes that you can notice straight away. For starters, Marriage for One is at its heart a love story.
