The author, John Le Carre wrote in November 14, 2006, as he reviewed the 150th printing of this edition, “Dr. Watson doesn’t write to you, he talks to you, with Edwardian courtesy, across a glowing fire. His voice has no barriers or affections. It is clear, energetic and decent, the voice of a tweedy, no-nonsense colonial Britisher at ease with himself.” The magnet stories for summer days and winter nights, illustrations by D. H. Friston, London: Groombridge and sons Although Doyle had written other adventure series, Professor Challenger and Brigadier Gerard, he considered his true calling to be an author of Medieval Romances, with knights and so forth. I read some of them and they are quite wordy and pretty bad. The short story was Doyle’s true métier. And I say, without hesitation, if not for Holmes, Doyle would now be forgotten.

My overall rating is 4.5 stars for the entire bind up. I do list each story and my rating individually, as well as my average rating for each collection.* The sofa design widely varies throughout the stories but the orientation with the head rest on the left is demanded in a scene in The Adventure of the Cardboard Box, a story which appears in some editions and not others. The same scene is also duplicated in some editions of The Resident Patient where The Adventure of the Cardboard Box is omitted. The illustration in The Adventure of the Cardboard Box is my source for this depiction. At the age of nine Conan Doyle was sent to the Roman Catholic Jesuit preparatory school, Hodder Place, Stonyhurst. He then went on to Stonyhurst College, leaving in 1875.I started out with the intention of conforming the general layout in the third version to a terraced house which seems to be the trend among recent 221B Baker Street depictions, including movies and TV dramas. But after some research I rejected this idea as unsupported and causing more problems than it solves. See the section below, Was 221B Baker Street a Terraced House? for more details. An unframed picture of Henry Ward Beecher: The Resident Patient and The Adventure of the Cardboard Box Most of the stories are highly atmospheric and if you've ever been to England it's very easy to immerse yourself in the narrative, which I thought was marvelous. His very person and appearance were such as to strike the attention of the most casual observer. In height he was rather over six feet, and so excessively lean that he seemed to be considerably taller. His eyes were sharp and piercing, save during those intervals of torpor to which I have alluded; and his thin, hawk-like nose gave his whole expression an air of alertness and decision. His chin, too, had the prominence and squareness which mark the man of determination. His hands were invariably blotted with ink and stained with chemicals, yet he was possessed of extraordinary delicacy of touch, as I frequently had occasion to observe when I watched him manipulating his fragile philosophical instruments. So the curtain does not just cover the window, but must also conceal enough space around the window to allow Holmes to enter and perform his secret task without making any noise or ruffling the curtain. This had to be a fairly large space.

Holmes decides to visit Sir James Walter, who was in charge of the papers. He has, however, died, apparently of a broken heart from the loss of his honour when the papers were stolen, according to his brother Colonel Valentine Walter. You appear to be astonished,” he said, smiling at my expression of surprise. “Now that I do know it I shall do my best to forget it.” That floor plan supposedly conforms with all of the stories in the Canon including in The Adventure of the Mazarin Stone -- except that when Holmes and Watson try to leave the premises undetected, they will run face to face into the villain who is coming up the stairs because their secret exit was taken away.
