Description

Standing in the Shadows of Love" is a 1966 hit single recorded by the Four Tops for the Motown label. Written and produced by Motown's main production team Holland–Dozier–Holland, the song is one of the most well-known Motown tunes of the 1960s. A direct follow-up to the #1 hit " Reach Out I'll Be There" (even featuring a similar musical arrangement), "Standing in the Shadows of Love" reached #2 on the soul chart and #6 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1967. [1] It also reached #6 in the UK. [2] Though the song was well-received, it has received some criticism. Author Martin Charles Strong notes that it rehashed the formula of "Reach Out I'll Be There" and achieved similar success by reaching the Top 10 in both the US and UK. [3] It is ranked #470 on Rolling Stone's list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time in 2010 and #464 in 2004.

What to know

Most still had a few leaves left clinging to their branches and twigs. Banks thought they seemed creepy in the louring twilight and half expected one of them to start moving like the Ents in Lord of the Rings .

What I find incredible is that after 28 novels featuring Banks we still learn new things about him. The supporting characters are well developed & there are some nice touches of humour amidst the drama. Even after a confession that wraps up all the loose ends, Banks can’t leave well enough alone. “They had a solid case, motive, means, confession, so what was wrong?” From Banks’s perspective, it’s all too tidy. Readers well know that Banks’s passion for justice and fairness impels him to keep poking away. If Gillespie didn’t exactly retire under a cloud, there were rumors clinging to him from early in his career when he was privy to an undercover operation where police infiltrated radical student organizations. Armed with this knowledge, Banks senses there may be a connection between the moribund inquiry into Alice Poole’s death, and the body found in Gillespie’s field.Robinson also does a good job of balancing the investigation with character development, giving the reader a sense of who the characters are, how they fit into the plot, and their motivations. I will say that readers new to Robinson may find the pacing of the book to be slow at times, as Robinson takes the time to build world and characters within the narrative. I’ve always enjoyed his style and love to sit with Banks as he listens to music, sees a piece of art, or reads a book of verse. This is a fantastic procedural novel and I was truly surprised on how it all came together. Highly Recommended!

Standing in the Shadows by Peter Robinson – Review

As always, Robinson’s writing is smooth, and he has crafted a plot that is intricate, has great depth, and a mystery that is well constructed and atmospheric. The narrative alternates between the two time-lines that seem totally unrelated, but over time meld into one. Late November 2019. An dig near Scotch Corner unearths a skeleton that turns out to be far more recent than the Roman remains the archaeologist is looking for. Detective Superintendent Alan Banks and his team are called in and, as an investigation into the find begins, the past and the present meet with devastating consequences. The second storyline is set 40 years later, with the discovery of a skeleton during the construction of a new shopping mall. Inspector Banks and his team struggle to identify the deceased and determine how the body ended up buried in an abandoned field. The latest case is a puzzler. It sets Banks to reminiscing about his previous cases and marriage. This is a new side of Banks and I liked it.
