Both Lagavulin and Macallan are priced higher than the everyday, mainstream whisky but they are still very much within reach of most whisky enthusiasts. The Macallan 12 Double Cask is the more affordable of the two. We may, but are not under any obligation, to release new functionalities and tools or other features for the Service every now and then. Lagavulin 8 approaches with a youthful, fresh nose. Its peaty smoke is bold yet lighter than the 16, infused with a clean, zesty citrus note, quite a surprise for an Islay malt. Despite its lighter smokiness, it allows the sweeter and fruitier undertones to be appreciated, presenting an enjoyable balance. The fermented wort is then distilled in a copper pot still known as the wash still. This process helps to concentrate and purify the spirit.You’ve had a chance to try a variety of Islay malts, you know your Bunnahabhain from your Bruichladdich and your Caol Ila from your Kilchoman. But an (admittedly rather eccentric) barman puts a (metaphorical) gun to your head and demands you name the most Islay of Islay whiskies. John Johnston founded the Lagavulin distillery in 1816, though there had been as many as ten illicit distilleries in the area since 1742. Lagavulin was home to legal distilling under Johnston’s eye, however. Shortly after it opened, a distillery named Ardmore was opened close by, though this became part of Lagavulin a few decades later. Lagavulins are aged for 8-16 years, while Macallans are aged for 12-25 years. Macallan is usually more expensive than Lagavulin because it undergoes a longer maturation process. Lagavulin 16 is an exemplary single malt Scotch whisky with the peat-smoke qualities associated with southern Islay, along with a captivating richness and dryness that make this tipple unparalleled. Such excellence has earned Lagavulin 16 its rightful place as one of the most sought-after spirits from the acclaimed Lagavulin distillery. On to taste, the heart of any whisky. The Lagavulin 16 came out slightly ahead against the 8’s. While the Lagavulin 8 does bring a delightful balance of smoky, sweet, and citrusy notes, I found the depth and complexity of the 16 more engaging. The layers of smoky sweetness, intertwined with deep-sea salty notes, created a narrative in each sip that fascinated me.

Orange zest, smoked meat, iodine, brine and some crisp red apples orbit the dense caramel and peat core. Overall there is a slight medicinal / novocain quality to the whole aroma that is more intriguing than it is off putting. Sunny beaches are terrific. For times like that, there’s Lagavulin. It’s peaty, medicinal, pungent, smoky, a Band-aid factory in the throes of catastrophic meltdown, and when you really need it, nothing else will do.
