One last complicating factor: In 2021, the USB Type-C specification was updated to support power delivery up to 240 watts, instead of 100 watts. The change isn't yet supported by most machines, and will generally require a new cable. A battery icon with a warning on it appears in the system tray to indicate that a slow charger is connected, and the battery is discharging. The Slow charger notification might appear too. Make sure your PC (or phone), the external display, and the cable all support DisplayPort or MHL alternate modes. The HDMI Alternate Mode lets you project video and play audio on an external display that supports HDMI. Hard drive retention: Hard drive retention is not available on models with a soldered hard drive, including XPS 9315 2in1, Chromebooks or Venue tablets, except the Venue 11 Pro.

The Alternate Mode feature must be supported on the PC or phone's hardware and software, and the connected device or dongle. You might also need a specific USB-C cable. Chargers that don't have a standard USB Type-C connector might use a proprietary, nonstandard connector that your PC doesn’t support.

The four USB-A ports are generous, although limited to 5Gbps compared to the 10Gbps USB-C link to the computer. It also comes with both DisplayPort 1.4 and HDMI 2.0 ports for flexibility when adding an external display to your laptop. This comes with some major caveats. You'll need a charger that matches your laptop's wattage, and as mentioned you may be able to charge the battery a little when the laptop's powered off but not get enough power to use the computer if the battery's empty. Still, many if not most USB-C power sources are interchangeable. In fact, built-in power regulation is part of the USB-C spec, which makes mixing and matching power adapters that much easier. Make sure the device or dongle is connected to the USB-C port on your PC that supports the features of the device or dongle. For example, if you're connecting a Thunderbolt device, make sure it’s connected to the USB-C port on your PC that supports Thunderbolt. A PC (or phone) with USB Type-C connectors has larger power limits. If the connector supports USB Power Delivery, it can charge even faster at greater power levels.Your PC (or phone) might not provide enough power to the USB device. Plug a power adapter into your USB device, or try to use a different PC (or phone). That said, its extreme lightness and VGA may well tempt those who travel to multiple destinations with mixed display options.
