About this deal

With advances in technology, cordless models can now run for much longer and can cut larger areas versus older models. Although we state the runtime you can get from your tool where possible, in real world use there are a number of factors that influence the runtime and more information on this can be found here. Whilst the head itself has quite a robust construction, some customers have reported that the bump-feed mechanism wears out sooner than they would expect. Nevertheless, this doesn’t reflect every user’s experience. If the strimmer has a ‘male’ bolt end, there will be a bolt shaft on the end of the strimmer with exposed threads (the threads will be on the outside of the bolt shaft). Compatible heads will screw onto the bolt shaft without requiring an additional bolt. Handle types. There are two types of strimmer handles. The most common is a round, circular handle on the shaft of the strimmer, called a loop handle. It makes the strimmer easy and comfortable to control, and on the best models, it can be slid up and down the shaft, so you can adjust it to your height. Alternatively, there are ‘steer’ handles - two handles rather than a loop. These offer more control and let you use a comfortable scything motion when you cut, but they take up room, and can be a little more expensive. They’re also far more common on brushcutters and petrol strimmers than electric or cordless strimmers, so you might not find steer handles on many domestic models. The wire can also wrap around objects like metal posts causing the weed eater to be torn from your hands. If you’re using a really powerful petrol model then you could even end up on the floor through the twisting force of the snagged power tool.

That’s right, you will also find blade strimmers on the market. Although they don’t have the same popularity as line or cordless string strimmers, they have a number of benefits. Firstly, compared to plastic lines, blades are much tougher and therefore more durable. If you’ve used a line strimmer, you’ll know that the plastic can break, and this leads to constantly feeding new lines through. With blades, this simply isn’t a problem. Below are some common types of heavy-duty nylon lines that are particularly reliable and effective:It’s also worth bearing in mind that the strimmer head and line can only be as powerful as the machine they are attached to. It comes pre-loaded with 5 m of 2.5 mm diameter line and is easy to attach to the strimmer without needing to undo the entire head. The head screws on easily and can be fitted in minutes. Cutting head. The cutting head is the most important feature on a strimmer. It should be adjustable, so you can change the angle of the cut to cope with inclines and fiddly jobs. In most models, the head turns 90°, so you can trim along the edges of paths and flowerbeds. In the very best models, the cutting head also has wheels to help guide along edges and support the weight of the strimmer.

Some users make the mistake of swapping their string with metal wire, assuming that it can handle challenging jobs better than regular trimmer lines. However, this is a very dangerous thing to do, particularly if it goes against the manufacturer’s guidelines for your machine. Although it is only intended for use with Trueshopping strimmers, it fits other models as well; however, it’s difficult to know which ones exactly without trying it, therefore there is a bit of risk involved if your strimmer isn’t from Trueshopping. Although this strimmer head is compatible with a lot of strimmers, it is quite large and needs to be used with machine with sufficient power; it will fit most straight shaft strimmers over 33 cc. There’s no need to take the head apart to secure it in place and it is easy to fit with the five screws provided. Interestingly, our second recommendation uses both a line and a blade. How does this work? Well, there’s an interchangeable head. For those who want the benefits of both, this is the perfect solution. Let’s say you have a large garden with all sorts of gardening challenges, this Bosch strimmer is adaptable and will help with them all. Without even removing the guard, you can switch between blade and line depending on the task at hand. I found the process really easy to do and I expect most other people will too.Next up, we have a brilliant effort from VonHaus and one of the reasons we like it so much is because it fits into their fantastic garden tool range. Just as we saw with Terratek, one battery fits several products including the hedge trimmer. Rather than having batteries clogging up the shed, you only need one. While talking about the battery, we should note that it takes just one hour to charge the trimmer. For those living in residential areas, the low vibration and noise makes it ideal.

Firstly, think about what type of grass you'll be cutting most often. Will it be a grass lawn, or coarser, more overgrown vegetation? For trimming short to medium-length grass, tidying edges and reaching places where the lawnmower can’t, a grass trimmer is the best option. For long and overgrown grass, weeds and small trees, consider a brushcutter. Or if you're not sure what you'll be cutting, or are likely to have both grass and brush to cut, look out for machines that are both grass trimmers and brushcutters. Some brushcutters have interchangeable blades and wires. Use blades for longer grass, shrubs and weeds, or change to a line when trimming shorter grass and around delicate areas. Cutting widthThere are three options when it comes to the line-feeding mechanism of strimmer heads: ‘automatic feed’, ‘bump feed’ and ‘manual feed’. Round Line – Round line is a traditional type of trimmer line that’s perfect for basic trimming jobs. It’s easy to use, less prone to breakage, and offers excellent flexibility when cutting around obstacles. Electric corded strimmers. Corded strimmers use a power cable connected to mains electricity. Depending on the length of the cable, these strimmers are more suitable for smaller gardens, but you can expand their reach with an extension lead. They’re also more dangerous than cordless strimmers because you run the risk of accidentally cutting the cable.
