About this deal

The cemetery is alive with faint, spectral shapes, led by a woman who died before her time... and Keira, the only person who can see her, has become her new target. Determined to help put the ghost to rest, Keira digs into the spirit's past life with the help of unlikely new friends, and discovers a history of deception, ill-fated love, and murder. I love that the story is so immersive, which is down to a clever plot but more importantly believable characters that evolve over the course of the novel. None of the characters are sugary sweet, they all have an agenda which is tested in different ways as the cost of loyalty is tested. Lando’s lead is an excellent character and I gravitated towards this figure from the early moments of the novel, right through to the dramatic close. A man with an inherent drive to get to the truth, I greatly admired Callum’s tough resolve. I also found Callum’s past history in regards to his family and acquaintances interesting to uncover. The folk of Granite Creek are a fantastic conglomeration and I saw them as a very solid representation of a community feeling the impact of such long standing tragedy. Lando interrogates this aspect of her novel at all points, making the community tension aspect a true highlight of this novel. I love this latest book from an extremely talented author, sure, there more blood than spook but that absolutely suits the dramas we witness. I love the journeys through the various plays too as they often mirror the leading characters desires and intents. It’s an absorbing and compelling read from start to finish. Highly recommended. She acts like she knows all these people for year and years but it's been 4 days. 4 days!! Everyone is giving this stranger in there tiny village free flowers, a place to stay, groceries, and drinks at the coffee shop. She's sad that she is leaving everyone and doesn't want to go because they're all best friends after 4 days!!! What is it with this author that she makes all her characters best friends after meeting one time?!

Though this is my first novel by Purcell, I can clearly see why she is highly praised as the master of haunting tales. This was an absolutely delicious read.

In his search for answers, Callum fights to keep his feet firmly on the trail as he battles the deafening call of the rainforest burrowing into his ears. After all, everyone knows that the worst things in the rainforest are those unseen. Please note that spa facilities are not applicable for pregnant women and guests below 18 years of age. This did have ghosts and a haunting don’t get me wrong. But it also has a weird amnesia plot line, men with guns, and the mc running from someone who may or may not be out to kill her. And then just like on top of that she just didn’t happens to have the ability to see ghosts that she can apparently turn off and on? She’s supposed to be hiding from men who want to kill her, but instead of doing that she’s openly walking around town digging for info about a 50+ year old murder so she can put the ghost to rest? Don’t even get me started on the fact that she doesn’t know who’s dangerous or who isn’t…. But gives tons of info that could be important away. The whole memory thing was just….. ugh. I don’t wanna rip into this because it’s cozy horror…. A tremor shook Lilith's frame. Her eyes flew open, fixed and staring at the gallery. The audience looked over their shoulders. Did she see something we couldn't?” With the help of a shop keeper in the town of Blighty named Zoe and the help of a local doctor intern named Mason, Keira sets out to find whatever she can on why there are restless spirits in the area along with finding out more about herself and how she came to end up in that area with only the memory of her name.

But I don’t think I’ll continue it. If I want something that feels different by Darcy, I’ll probably try “from below”, because who doesn’t love haunted ships? Mrs Dyer wants to prepare Jenny for theatre life and Shakespeare productions in particular. She pays for her to see Dr. Faustus at a local theatre. The actor playing Faustus is well renowned for being the best. But the performance becomes marred with tragedy when the actor dies on stage in a grisly and gory fashion. A small timepiece seems to be connected and Jenny feels distraught at what she’s witnessed.

Advance Praise

This novel reflects that drawing in quality, that edge of something not quite seen. The children of the town had been warned about the rainforest and the granite boulders. Yet they all went there, with a jingling friendship bracelet tied around their wrist. To save themselves from the siren song of the land?

There’s many topical themes in the book, all added with a deft touch, including domestic violence, racism, sexual harassment, date rape and PTSD. From the initial missing person search, we begin to understand in greater depth Callum’s real reason for being there. And what we discover is a bitter and tragic past that becomes compelling as it slowly unfolds. The author does a remarkable job of gradually telling Callum’s story by unravelling his past as he comes to terms with his return to Granite Creek. If you choose to fight the Crone, you lose an ally in the coming battle. However, Anna lives, and the Bloody baron and the wife ride off into the sunset, never to be seen again. What is it about Keira? She just makes friends with people as soon as they look at her - they are inviting her to come hang with them. Despite her unique gift, Soon-ae is an introverted and lonely girl who lives a secluded life with her grandmother. When In-chul comes to interview her about the murders, she confides in him about the ghost she has been talking to. Her story piques In-chul's interest, and he decides to investigate further.Zoe's stupid ridiculous reasoning for Keira to watch out for Mason is hilarious. She tells her that he went through years of schooling to become a doctor and dropped out his last year. That's it! Ohhhhh scandalous!! Zoe made a noise that was somewhere between derision and annoyance. “Look, I’m not telling you to shun him or anything, but…just be cautious. He’s hiding something. And in my calculated opinion, there’s an extremely high chance that he’s a serial killer who had to flee the campus in fear of being caught.” Why does that mean he's hiding something?? Maybe he couldn't afford school anymore. Maybe someone was going through an illness. Obsession plays a large role in this book, and is shown through multiple lenses. We have Mrs Dyer, obsessed with bringing down Lilith and determined to do whatever it takes to ensure that happens, and Lilith herself who is so incredibly obsessed with not only performing, but ensuring that she goes out and gives the performance of a lifetime every time she steps on the stage, but both of these characters share one, large obsession, which brings them only darkness and danger and death. Purcell shows just how encompassing obsession can be and how, once we loose focus on it, our world can come crashing down around us, making us a mere shell of who we were before. Purcell blends the magical with the mundane brilliantly, ensuring were never quite sure who is behind the tragic goings on at the theatre, and leaving it open enough for our imaginations to run wild. The Whispering Dead by Darcy Coates is a paranormal mystery novel, and the first in the Gravekeeper series. I wouldn't call it horror.

It’s all down to how this entryway was built. The low arches and curve of the domed ceiling help sound to travel and follow the arches, and allow you and your partner to whisper sweet nothings to one another, even when the terminal is super busy! As the curtains open on this disturbing Purcell play, your sense should be twitching as every single one is going to be It sure left a whole lot unanswered though. I know it's to build anticipation for the next book, and it's not a cliff-hanger exactly. But I really want some of the questions answered. Like who she was before she lost her memory and who it was that was chasing her and why.Laura Purcell excels in the territory she has claimed as her own, the dark, disturbing and the tragic in this, with her chilling, atmospheric Victorian gothic storytelling with its elements of horror, with its blood and gore, as she slowly immerses the reader in the drama laden world of the characters that inhabit the Mercury Theatre in London's West End. The narrative is structured around 5 plays that echo the themes and issues of the characters, whilst simultaneously driving the storylines onwards. It soon becomes apparent that it is no accident that the plays include Dr Faustus and Macbeth. Jenny Wilcox is a desperate woman, drowning in a precarious situation exacerbated by her brother Greg, leaving her solely responsible for her family. So when she is made a job offer that she cannot refuse, she accepts, the pay is generous, there is a house and includes much needed essential medical treatment for a sibling, but will she live to regret her decision? This was just the most hard to read Coates I’ve come across. You have to suspend your disbelief with all of her books…. But for this one I just kind of couldn’t.
