About this deal

Try to show how the characters behaved in the context of the plot, scene, or with other characters. We also have the accessories which were worn alongside the main costume, such as the crown Helen Mirren wore as Cleopatra in 1982. Our oldest set of costumes comes from the Benson Company who performed Shakespeare’s plays during the Victorian period. It was quite usual for some parts to be ‘doubled up’ where one person would play two or more characters because they were not on stage at the same time. The plays would be structured to allow for this. Later in Shakespeare’s life he was able to afford more people on stage at once because his company was so successful. In Twelfth Night , for example, nearly every single character is on stage in the final scene, meaning that no doubling up was possible.

To make the bags of blood, the actors would fill animal bladders with animal blood. If the scene was particularly gory they might also use pigs’ intestines to throw across the stage. We have more than 4,000 items in our costume collection. They include costumes from every one of Shakespeare’s 37 plays, and from other RSC shows, such as Matilda and Dr Faustus. The Benson Company costumes In this year’s production, the witches go through three costume changes throughout the play – we will explore the concept behind these costumes and discuss how they create meaning in regard to the themes and characters within the play. GIVE IT A GOA Midsummer Night’s Dream is a play all about fantasy which means there are plenty of weird and wonderful props that we have in our props collection such as pixie ears from 1989, large donkey teeth for Bottom in 1994, colourful noise makers from Peter Brook’s pivotal production from 1970 and even a realistic dog puppet from 1981.

The Globe’s name was symbolic – it meant that the theatre represented the whole world. Shakespeare himself wrote: ' All the world’s a stage/ And all the men and women merely players '. Although the theatre always looked the same, and did not have the same elaborate sets that we have today, it could represent any place and any time. Lennox, P. and Mirabella, B., 2016 Shakespeare and Costume edited by Lennox, P. and Mirabella, B., London: Bloomsbury, p. 5.Shakespeare tried to flatter the Earl of Southampton into being his patron by dedicating his first long poem, Venus and Adonis, to the Earl. It seems to have worked – he published a second long poem also dedicated to the Earl.

Because the actors owned the company, new plays written for the company had to include parts for all the main actors to let them show their strengths. This is one of the reasons why you get funny bits even in the most serious tragedies. So in Macbeth we have the role of the Porter, whose drunken antics amuse the crowds, designed for the comic in the company. We have a paper archive consisting of approximately 25,000 books, including Shakespeare’s folios from all four editions of print, several quartos, Early Modern literature, as well as production images, musical scores, prompt books and costume bibles from RSC productions. The Apprentice Costume Accessories Makerrole will be based in both the Millinery & Jewellery and Costume Props & Footwear teams. You will learn how to construct and adapt costume accessories including hats, armour, shoe decoration and jewellery. This will also lead to a Level 3 Garment Maker apprenticeship standard. Imagin you’re a costume designer. The director wants you to design costumes for the witches and Macbeth’ the play will be sent in a future dystopian society. You must explain the design choices you made.

You need to consider the subject matter for your poster. So you need to research the topic and understand it before you begin designing. Leave things open to interpretation – once you have an idea don’t tell people exactly what you are doing but hint at certain things and let people draw their own conclusions. The king or queen might occasionally commission a play or pay especially for a performance but would not be the full patron of the company. The exception to this was the Lord Chamberlain’s Men, who became the King’s Men when James I came to the throne and took over as patron of their company. James loved the theatre and the company performed at court twice as often as they had under Elizabeth. Did you know? Please draw your costume designs onto the template provided. You can add colour or written notes if it helps to explain the design.
