About this deal

Rebekah Joan has tested and written about everything from homebrewing kits to meat thermometers for The Spruce Eats. She tried out the Le Creuset Classic Whistling Kettle at home. Heating accuracy: For electric kettles only, we tested accuracy by measuring the water temperature in each kettle at four different settings. (We used 175, 185, 190, and 200 degrees, the most common temperature options on the models we tested.) We also tested the keep warm mode on kettles that had one by heating to 200 degrees, then setting to keep warm and measuring the temperature after 15 and 30 minutes.

Dimensions: 11.5 x 6.75 x 8 inches | Weight: 2.75 pounds | Capacity: 0.9 liter | Temperature control: Yes; 135 to 212 degrees Heating speed: We added a liter of water at 50 degrees to each kettle and then timed how long it took to come to a boil, using a medium flame with stovetop models and the high setting with electric ones. We also tested how well the kettles could keep water hot by taking the the temperature of the water 10 and 30 minutes after removing from the heat. Chantal Anniversary Enamel on Steel Whistling Tea Kettle: This stovetop kettle has a similar look and is available in a similar assortment of colors as the Le Creuset model, which was our top choice, but at a lower price. However, it performed somewhat worse on our tests. At minimum, all electric kettles can bring water to a boil—and if you opt for an inexpensive model, such the Cosori Electric Glass Kettle, that’s all the kettle can really do. This may be sufficient for casual use, but if you frequently make tea or coffee, you may want to look for a variable-temperature kettle. This electric kettle boils water fast and can be set to six specific temperatures, each one suited for a different variety of tea. Made of durable glass, it holds 1.7 liters of liquid and has an auto-shut-off function for safety. You can serve hot tea or other beverages directly at the table; the kettle lifts off of the base easily, and you won’t have to worry about it being attached to the cord. There’s also a mesh filter built into the spout, a wide opening for easy cleaning, and a handle that won’t get hot. You'll always know when the kettle is running, too, as it illuminates a soft blue light when on.Some customers say the kettle is on the heavier side, so consider if that will be an issue before buying. Apart from that, the only other downside is that the base is a little on the flimsy side. But, for the price, this kettle is hard to beat. To damages or defects occurring during commercial use, rental use, or any use for which the product is not intended; Electric kettles are available in a range of sizes, typically between 0.9 and 1.8 liters—that’s roughly 4 and 8 cups. Smaller kettles, such as the Fellow Corvo EKG, take up less space in your kitchen, but they can generally boil enough water for only 2 or 3 cups at a time. There are some cons to consider before purchasing, however. First, the item is fairly loud when boiling; this may not be an issue to many, but it is worth noting nonetheless. The lid also doesn't open all the way, which can make it a little difficult to clean.

Editorial Director Taysha Murtaugh received a sample to test and found the kettle easy to control, with a steady flow rate. "This kettle is comparable to my old Hario model, with one significant advantage: I love that I'm able to control the temperature of each drink, which is critical to my morning French press or pour-over," she says. "When heating up, it does create a louder 'whirring' sound than others I've tried, but if you can even call that a con, it's a small one for great coffee." To damages caused by connecting peripherals, additional equipment or accessories other than those recommended in the user manual. The thermometer is fastened to the lid and has a shaded area over the optimal brewing temperature of 195 to 205 degrees. Customers add that the spout has a consistent flow rate and is easy to maneuver. There's also a great deal of praise for the handle, which is sturdy, ergonomic, and always stays cool to the touch. While researching and writing this piece, I spoke to three different experts: tea sommelier Poorvi Chordia, cofounder of Herbs & Kettles; Eileen Donaghey, the Afternoon Tea Expert; and Kaleena Teoh, director of education at Coffee Project New York. They offered insights on how to select the best electric kettle for your home, including tips on brewing the perfect cup of tea and coffee. b) INDIRECT, SPECIAL, INCIDENTAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES EVEN IF AROVAST CORPORATION OR ONE OF ITS SUPPLIERS HAS BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OR LIKELIHOOD OF SUCH DAMAGES.

Ease of Use Features

If you frequently host guests, it’s worth getting a larger kettle to make multiple servings at once. “I try to use a kettle that can brew over 1.5 liters,” says Donaghey. “While I might not use the larger capacity every day, it is easier when it comes to having tea parties at home to be able to boil water faster.” Materials The Zwilling Enfinigy performed well in past year's tests, and we loved the minimalist design. David Watsky/CNET Dimensions: 7.9 x 6.1 x 9.5 inches | Weight: 2.6 pounds | Capacity: 1.7 liters | Temperature control: No Of course, all those lovely features (along with the Zwilling brand name) are things you have to pay for. The kettle also can't go in the dishwasher like many stovetop models, though its stainless steel interior is easy enough to wipe down with a soapy sponge. We found the heatproof handle on the Susteas kettle to be very effective, but it doesn't fold down, which makes it take up a lot of shelf space. (On the other hand, it looks nice enough to live on the stovetop.) With that huge capacity, this kettle is fairly heavy and awkward when full, and we found that it doesn't hold heat for very long.

Blooming is an important step in the brewing process where coffee grounds are lightly saturated with water before the rest of the water is poured. It makes the coffee release CO2, also known as "degassing," which leads to a purer taste. According to Shunan Teng, the founder and CEO of Tea Drunk, one way to make better tea at home is to use hotter water for high-quality tea and lower-temperature water for subpar tea. "Hotter temperatures bring out the flavors in better tea," she says, "and lower temperatures dilute the flaws in lower-quality tea. With bad tea, the bitterness and astringency would come out with higher temperatures." Can you heat milk in an electric kettle? Value: After concluding all of our other tests, we revealed the retail prices of the kettles. Stovetop kettles are generally less expensive than electric ones, so we looked at the categories separately, comparing individual prices to the average for each type. And the quality of your tea kettle can affect how your tea tastes. Shunan Teng, the founder and CEO of Tea Drunk, told us that an incorrect water temperature is one of three main brewing mistakes that prevent tea from reaching its best flavor. The other two mistakes are, first, brewing for too long or too short and, second, using too much or too little tea. Ease of use: As we performed the heating tests, we noted any difficulties with filling and transporting the kettle, as well as with the controls for electric models. We specifically evaluated pouring by using a full kettle to fill a mug on the counter. Models that splashed and spilled lost points, and more accurate spouts gained them. Many electric kettles are simple: hit the switch, wait for the water to boil. But you can also find kettles with a number of convenient features, including preset drink options, temperature holding, and automatic shutoff. Figuring out what features you want will also provide a clearer idea of your price point. You'll also want to consider the capacity you need, which varies widely between models. Another point of consideration is wattage; generally the higher-wattage kettles heat the water faster. There aren't that many app-connected kettles on the market, still, but if you're trying to choose between them, here are some questions to help you figure things out. How much water do you generally need to boil? Electric kettles don’t get too dirty—after all, you’re only boiling water—but it’s important to clean them occasionally to prevent mineral deposits from building up inside. Once a month, fill your kettle with one part white vinegar and two parts water, then bring the mixture to a boil. Let the kettle soak for 30 minutes or so to break down limescale and other minerals that may have gathered on the inside of the kettle. This piece was written by Derek Rose, the coffee and tea expert for The Spruce Eats. He researches a variety of coffee products, from measuring scoops to commercial espresso machines, and interviews field experts for their insight. He's a fan of non-electric coffee makers, typically using the Bodum Brazil French Press at home.

I think the Caraway Whistling Tea Kettle is a beautiful kitchen appliance that should last for years, even though it has some quirks I didn’t expect given the price. If you frequently drink tea or make coffee with your kettle, it’s often worth spending a bit more on a model that offers variable temperature control. These kettles allow you to adjust the water temperature based on the drink you’re preparing—for instance, green tea is best brewed at 175 degrees. “If you use a higher heat on a green tea, it could singe the leaves, leaving you with a very bitter taste,” explains Donaghey. If you like to keep things simple, the Cosori Electric Glass Kettle is a no-frills model that’s designed to do one thing: boil water. Made from durable borosilicate glass that lets you watch the water heat up, this inexpensive 1.7-liter model doesn’t have a control dial or any temperature presets. To start the kettle, all you have to do is press a lever located at the base of the handle, at which point a blue light turns on inside the kettle to let you know it’s on. Several minutes later, you have boiling water—and that’s really all there is to it.
