After reading through the book, which was also illustrated by David Weisner, the author of award winning books such as Tuesday(1992) I was pleasantly surprised to find a creepy and somewhat humorous book. Bunting's straightforward story about a boy living in Oregon who learns to accept the loss of loved ones, including his dog, is heartwarming despite some heavy touches. I cannot reccomend this book enough to readers of all ages; young children will enjoy the light-hearted romp of the monsters as they wander and sneak about the city and play in fountains; older children and adults will like it's folkloric elements and stunning art. So begins the poetic narrative of this striking picture book from author Eve Bunting and illustrator David Wiesner.

Its language is both economical and rich, its mood a complex blend of the eerie, the sensuous (the gargoyles ``lick the stars with long, stone tongues''), the innocent (the creatures evince a childlike curiosity and a touching, very human desire for company) and the melancholic (they ``have no love of humans who have made them so'').

The illustrations are dark and interesting but they don’t make you want to explore the text and further. This ominous book, thrillingly chillustrated in high-contrast scratchboard, describes an uncanny Halloween decoration. Eve Blunting versteht es, mit ihren Texten den genialen Zeichnungen von David Wiesner bezauberndes Leben einzuhauchen. Her other Clarion titles for very young readers include My Big Boy Bed, which was also illustrated by Maggie Smith, and Little Bear's Little Boat, illustrated by Nancy Carpenter.

Little Brown Puppy makes a spontaneous present of a "big, beautiful bone" to his mother, kicking off a chain reaction of offspring-to-mother gifts among all his friends. A contemporary Italian-American family living in New York City makes its annual pilgrimage to Liberty Island to celebrate the birthday of the Statue of Liberty in this poignant picture book. As it is quite dark and brooding in places it is only suitable for use with KS2 pupils, but it is packed full of imagery and figurative language that can be played with.Yes, the gargoyles look a little menacing and the overall tone of the book is a little dark, but it's also fun in the same way that Halloween is fun. The poetic phrasing might be too confusing for younger children and might require further explanation even for older children.

Each page is a work of art unto itself, with blacks, whites, and grays that add immeasurably to this gothic little poem about mischievous gargoyle statues that come alive at night to frolic and play jokes on human beings. Die Welt da oben gehört den Tauben, die dick, träge und verschlafen es sich auf den Gargoyles bequem machen und sich von der Sonne bescheinen lassen. I also like that there aren’t too many words in the book so it really puts the emphasis on the images. I checked out this book from my local library for my four-year-old daughter who wanted a "scary" book, and the first thing that caught my eye was the excellent art work.

As the illustrations reveal the goofy antics of gargoyles at nighttime, the text is written in such a whimsical manner that it all contrasts beautifully with the black and white illustrations. In this haunting black-and-white picture book, Bunting (see A Day's Work, reviewed above) and Wiesner (Tuesday) imagine the secret life of gargoyles. He creates three-dimensional models of objects he can't observe in real life, such as flying pigs and lizards standing upright, to add authenticity to his drawings. You don't need to talk about how they lick the stars and have "green-pickled tongues" and "swing on branches, da-de-da, and feel the air move cool against their pockmarked stone.
