Stokoe has continued to explore his uniquely dark view of lives lived in the modern world, and in 2014 was nominated for the Grand Prix de Littérature Policière – France’s most prestigious crime writing award – for his novel, EMPTY MILE. I don't really have an idea how to perform such an analysis, partly because I can see how the ingredients work together to produce the book's effects, and partly because I can't enumerate the kinds of extreme subjects, acts, and descriptions. This book left me feeling dirty and worthless, I would have given up but I had the misguided notion that somehow, someway, something was going to happen but it didn't and now I need a really long bleach shower and a hug.

One of the most unstinting, imaginative, brutal and original contemporary novels ever written about the punishments that come with the prioritization of fame. These pieces all tie together in a sexual, violent, disgusting, bloody fashion that makes for a engrossing read. But the time the main character had bonked a few animals the supposedly shock tactics quickly become boring ,increasingly desperate and annoying. Honestly, it could have been written by a group of 13-year-old boys with a wardrobe full of black trench coats, indulging in a creative-writing circle jerk. While he was important for Steven’s development and self discovery, I found his character to be too-over the top for the rest of the story. Or where I had to simply absorb what I had read before I tried feeding my brain more images and more pain.

Matthew Stokoe has written a novel like no other I've ever read - appalling, funny, and possessed of a sense of outre violence that makes Joris-Karl Huysmans read like Louisa May Alcott. I've never read something so ridiculous, so poorly written, so completely embarassing in terms of "extreme literature". Artists who have tried such experiments have found they need to work hard to aestheticize the difficult images: Andres Serrano’s beautiful, nearly abstract morgue photographs are an example, and so are some of Joel-Peter Witkin’s elaborately staged, faux-antique photographs of people with various medical conditions. Things that occur – animal abuse and torture, self mutilation, matricide, infanticide, beastiality, scat play and ingestion and homicide just to name a few.Still others ranked this one star or five depending on their emotional state upon writing their review. In visual art, it’s common for students to become interested in violent or disturbing images, such as photos of car crash victims or medical deformities, and to try to use them in their work.
