This was just in time for the unveiling of the Tower during the Queens Platinum Jubilee Celebrations after around two years of renovation work. Exit using the broken gate carry straight on along the path up the slope, past a pond and on to the road. Turton Tower in Chapeltown was home to the Lords of the Manor of Turton and dates to the 12th century.

This site can be used by Members for recording your trig bagging exploits, as well as suppliying you with the GPS waypoints of all the trigpoints. From the summit of Black Hill head Northwest on a small worn grass path, which eventually becomes more visible as it wanders down the hill. With a little thought you could have substituted Alastair Maclean, a great unintentional cliché-mongerer who, I discreetly dropped some time ago.I hope this comment - the usual non-sequitur I go in for these days - makes up for my absences from Conrad Walks of late. The observant of you will note that very close to Marsden there is also the trig pillar of Krives just East of Deer Hill Reservoir. A perfect journal of your hiking adventures in Lancashire – now your challenge is to complete them all! If you want to bag a trig point too with your little ones then try out my top 3; Beamsley Beacon, P inhaw Beacon and Brimham Rocks. A pleasant lane climbed steeply through trees then opened onto hillside with the track badly eroded by running water which had defeated cobbled engineered drainage crossing the track.

Rob, of Peterborough, completed a list of 6,190 trigs and celebrated his achievement with 29 friends and fellow trig baggers in 2021. As you head uphill here you feel like you’re heading towards Holme Moss radio mast which is in the distant, but eventually the path steepens and leads you across the plateau to Black Hill trig pillar. It was only when one of my Twitter buddies, Moira, asked how many I had “bagged” did I stop and try to work it out. An OS spokesperson explained: “Triangulation works by determining the location of a point by measuring angles to it from known points at either end of a fixed baseline. The spin I would put on this is that it's not a new walking project, but a continuation of a general trig-bagging endeavour; it's just focussing on a new map square. For example, you could hike, run or cycle to all the trig pillars in your country or region, or aim to reach all the trig pillars on one OS Landranger map. If you want to see the route on OS Maps and download a GPX file here’s the link and here’s a zipped GPX file.

A stile from the road onto a public footpath and half a field of gloopy cow trodden mud and another stile and I was getting the best view ever of Blackburn Rovers stadium - perhaps it is named after a sponsor, I don't know? The only exception to this is perhaps Black Hill – the route I took to get off the hill is the Old Pennine Way which is not very good, and I would definitely say avoid in bad weather as it would be easy to get lost. To the best of my knowledge the routes are entirely on public rights of way or within areas that are open for public access. Visiting all the trig points on a particular edition of the Ordnance Survey map is a particular pleasure for me.In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries the timbered farmhouse buildings on the east and north of the Tower and the Entrance Hall were added. The trig is next to a bit of a grotty pond but we did see a pair of reed buntings near to Norbrick Farm. It was the first time he’d climbed it (we’ve done it twice since) and nearly 40 years after I first did. Some people set themselves the challenge of reaching a set number of trigs in a day, such as all the trigs in your local hills. With limited time today an hours drive had me mopping up three trigs on the south-western corner of the map.

if you’d like to cherry-pick a few other the nicer ones you haven’t done, take a look at my site – happy to recommend a few of my favourites too if you venture this way in the future! But it is a lovely diversion taking in some great history and scenery before the final push back to Burnley, which is now only 20 miles away.
