it felt like a story i'd read a thousand times before and i wasn't super engaged with the characters or plot. Finch doesn’t take his foot off the accelerator right up until the last page which leaves you breathless and stunned, desperate for more. We also see some characters that should have stood up for Hazel but never really did, or only did when it was too late. This is a dark fantasy series centered around a mashup of mythological and fantasy retellings that is slow burn and slow build with multiple love interests, shifters, forbidden love, multiple POV, dark themes, cliffhangers, twists, spice, betrayal, heartache, redemption, and so much more. His first book, Floodland, was published by Orion in 2000, and won the Branford-Boase award for best debut children's novel. i am going to read the next book out of curiosity due to the cliffhanger ending, but if the sequel doesn't deliver, i'm very done with this series. With the body count rising by the day, DI Caroline Hills and DS Dexter Antoine need to uncover the link before more innocent people die. There’s also an unfinished feeling; we spend literally half the book reading about step-brothers and then there’s suddenly nothing about them.

Scarlett's trip starts out innocently enough … though she thinks she's going to die after listening to native Scottish music performed by men and women dressed in traditional costumes. I'm not opposed to a "no plot just vibes" book for a good pick-me-up where I can go along for the ride and enjoy a good time but this is definitely leaning towards the "no plot no vibes" side. Of course lots of people are going to love the feel of this book but for me, this book was unfortunately a bad experience from beginning to end. There were also vague setting descriptions and we don't really find out what any of the characters look like. Marcus has been shortlisted for the CILIP Carnegie Medal five times, the Edgar Allan Poe Award (twice) and the Guardian Children’s Fiction Prize (four times). They must uncover the mystery of what has happened both to Sorrel’s father, who is plagued by a strange madness that prevents him from sleeping, and to Marko’s father, a doctor, who has mysteriously gone missing after travelling to Venice to help his old friend .

The book switches perspective throughout, but the writing structure didn't change between the two perspectives. The book ends on a cliffhanger and of course there are a lot of plot threads that are unanswered, especially back amongst the humans/mortals. Bad stuff happens to the FMC in the beginning, Death takes her home, then nothing for the remaining 80% of the book. If you want to read a book that grips you and doesn’t let go, and isn’t 1000 pages long (I’m looking at you Crescent City by SJM), this book is for you. Claire continues to come into her own in this book, showing more courage and spunk than you would expect in the circumstances they find themselves in.The reading level and subject matter are appropriate for early teen girls, and while there is a fair amount of misdirection, there is, in the end, also not much of a mystery per se to solve. A school trip turns into a nightmare when Kim and Wes leave the plague-village of Eyam with more than they bargained for, and a stolen artefact wreaks revenge. I feel like the timing and flow of the plot was a little off but other than these things I really loved the book. But someone clearly doesn't want her to forget: when a smoke bomb is thrown into the dorm where she and her best friend Taylor are staying, a note is left for her in their room by someone amid the confusion: "YOU CAN'T RUN AWAY FROM THE PAST, SCARLETT.
