The production included a holographic projection of Richard Burton, giant fire-breathing aliens, and epic visual effects. Justin Hayward, lead singer and guitarist for the Moody Blues, sings the song " Forever Autumn" (sung from the perspective of the Journalist), which was a hit single from the album.

The string section consisted of violins, violas, cellos, and double basses, totalling 50 players and led by violinist Patrick Halling. The music is intermixed with re-voiced narration and leitmotifs to carry the story forward via rhyming melodic lyrics that express the feelings of the various characters. Initially Wayne had Carlos Santana record guitar riffs and hooks to interpret the Martian's heat-ray, but his involvement ended after one day when Santana's manager spotted an issue in the contract and certain requests could not be met. The virtual Richard Burton was improved; the whole face was animated (an actor was found with a similar facial structure, all of Burton's narrative parts were mimed, and his face was superimposed onto the face of the actor). A company of soldiers is deployed at the common, and that evening an injured and exhausted Artilleryman wanders into the Journalist's house and tells him his comrades have been killed by fighting machines—tripod vehicles built and controlled by Martians, each armed with its own Heat-Ray.This was performed by both Anna-Marie Wayne and Newton Faulkner as their respective characters at the beginning of Act II. The album was released on 9 June; [9] [17] four weeks later, Wayne said he was able to repay CBS its share of the album's costs due to strong sales. It was a totally original concept album featuring legendary narration by Richard Burton and wonderful electronic music while also telling a faithful and enjoyable adaptation of H G Wells story. It was supported by an arena tour, followed by a stage show adaptation, running at the Dominion Theatre in London's West End from February to April 2016.
