One heartbreaking comment from Stephen (among many) seems to sum up the tragedy of these kids - when normal kids were being tucked up in bed by their parents, they were being "tied" to their beds.

Fred and Rose West truly felt that they could do whatever they wanted in their home, away from prying eyes. A first-hand account of the events at 25 Cromwell Street in Gloucester by the two oldest surviving children of the late Fred West and his wife Rosemary, who earlier this year were accused of the serial killing and torture of eighteen women and children. I don’t think this was ever meant to be a work of literary genius, but merely a life lived in the home of some of Britain’s worst serial killers. Mae is very loyal to her mum but admits her childhood was unusual , very strict and she had to put up with her fathers talk of sex.I come to the conclusion that they were brainwashed into standing by them, because what else could the reason be? However having read books which were obviously published after I had some knowledge of the goings on already, what was nice to hear was Stephens view point in his own words.

Read more about the condition Very Good: A book that has been read and does not look new, but is in excellent condition. The best but of the whole book is the letters at the back of the book from Fred and Rose to Mae and Stephen. It is shocking and at times upsetting but probably the saddest thing of all is in reading how the two West children appear to be trying to make sense of the nonsensical and inexplicable. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. The two oldest surviving children of Fred and Rosemary West tell the terrifying story of life at 25 Cromwell Street.

I feel its an engrossing and honest book and the loving letters from Rose to Mae sent a shiver down my spine she sounds like any loving mother expect she is imprisoned for Ten Murders. Very much built around the uncovering of bodies and lengthy investigation into what went on, this second section reveals a vast amount of confusion and emotional conflict between Stephen and Mae. However the end result, no matter what the real motivation behind the publication of the book was, is the publication of a truly unique insight into exactly what it was like behind the walls of 25 Cromwell Street. Mae and Stephen West’s parents were two of Britain’s most notorious serial killers, Fred and Rose West, who brutally tortured and murdered 12 people, including two of their own children. However, Fred and Rose married despite the baby having a different father, and in turn had their first child together – Annie Marie. Their sister, Heather, was 16 when her parents murdered her after she tried to escape – then buried her in the garden. And as it did, so the nightmarish hell that had been allowed to breed behind closed doors crossed those final barriers.

First published back in December of 1995, Stephen and Mae West’s book ‘Inside 25 Cromwell St’ provided a unique first-person account of their upbringing as two of the surviving children from Fred and Rosemary West’s family. The authors describe in harrowing detail how Fred and Rose lured young women to their home, subjected them to unimaginable torture and abuse, and then killed them.
