I suppose there’s also the potential for too many mediocre reviews, and I guess that’s the guy whom everybody thinks can’t make up his freaking mind. Although I was aware that this is a collection of items pulled from other Sedaris books, many may not so it will appear to be a money grab . I figure that at least as an elf I will have a place; I'll be in Santa's Village with all the other elves. Anyone who's read a few of his books will know that Sedaris's family and friends are a rich seam of comic inspiration which he shamelessly and frequently mines. This book seems sort of thrown together, most of the stories not relating to anything in particular, whether to each other or to any unified theme, but I would expect some of his other collections to have better focus, and I will retain his other books in my “to read” list based on that expectation. If you ever held an undignified job, this is somehow your story - even if you never (pardon the pun) stooped so low as to play an elf. David Sedaris is a regular contributor to The New Yorker and Public Radio International's "This American Life. Dunbar's slow descent into insanity during the holiday season—belied by her insistently cheerful tone—as she is forced to cope with the discovery of her husband's infidelity, the resultant prostitute stepdaughter left in their care, and her drug-addict daughter's premature pregnancy.

I have been struggling to put my finger on exactly what I mean because there is dark humor I enjoy and this isn’t it. And most importantly, David Sedaris’ odd and unique voice is a vital part of his work — his pieces are written to be performed, not read. David Sedaris’s beloved holiday collection is new again with six more pieces, including a never before published story. The Tree is supposed to resemble a complex system of roots, but looks instead like a scale model of the human intestinal tract.

The worst part is that after I have accumulated three hundred dollars I have to remove two hundred, fill out half a dozen forms, and run the envelope of cash to the drop in the China Department or to the vault on the balcony above the first floor. Each of his four subsequent essay collections, Naked (1997), Holidays on Ice (1997), Me Talk Pretty One Day (2000), Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim (2004), and When You Are Engulfed in Flames (2008) have become New York Times Best Sellers.

In 2004 I was in a relationship where partner and I had very different ideas of what the holidays should look like. or what if I rate too many books highly (will people think I’m indiscriminate about which books are my favorites and therefore consider me unreliable?

It is one of the funniest books I have read especially the Christmas letter which mocks our whole culture of "who has more fun, better kids, better trips, etc. His observations are beyond funny and make you think about the 'traditions' at Christmas through a new light.

In Paris I just ran from view to view barely eating except for stuffing pastries in my mouth as I ran around, in Okinawa I walked and ate and ate and ate. One fellow stared at his hands and sighed, "There's no way I'm going to be admitted into law school.Along with such favorites as the diaries of a Macy's elf and the annals of two very competitive families, are Sedaris's tales of tardy trick-or-treaters ( Us and Them); the difficulties of explaining the Easter Bunny to the French ( Jesus Shaves); what to do when you've been locked out in a snowstorm ( Let It Snow); the puzzling Christmas traditions of other nations ( Six to Eight Black Men); what Halloween at the medical examiner's looks like ( The Monster Mash); and a barnyard secret Santa scheme gone awry ( Cow and Turkey). I was surprised to hear these people being described as retards and freaks, this is not something you expect to hear these days! Those are my favorites, and I would guess the favorite of many another, since Sedaris would put out book after book based on this kind of material for the next two decades.
