Although she’s determined to focus on her education, Maud is drawn to Frank, who has a fledgling theater company. But there are aspects of this experience as she watches the story come to life that remind her of points in her life, both treasured family memories and times of struggle, and the narrative alternates between two timelines – the film production in the 1930’s and the 1880’s where we see Maud’s life unfold.Ingrid Barrøy, her father, Hans, mother, Maria, grandfather Martin, and slightly addled aunt Barbro are the owners and sole inhabitants of Barrøy Island, one of numerous small family-owned islands in an area of Norway barely touched by the outside world. This weighed on my mind while I read portions of this book, describing the abuse Judy was subjected to during the filming of the movie. Hollywood, 1938: As soon as she learns that M-G-M is adapting her late husband’s masterpiece, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, for the screen, Maud Gage Baum sets about trying to visit the set.
