The ideal iPad Pro docking station that expands more than your desktop options – it expands your creativity. We took to the streets for some portraits and shot a few macro photos for this first installment in our sample gallery. While Apple’s stand is effectively just a hunk of metal with some springs inside, the StudioDock is a dedicated hub packed with various ports, Qi wireless chargers and a mounting point for an iPad Pro or iPad Air. However, the iPad itself counts as a touchscreen monitor and, depending on your needs, this could be a major plus. The StudioDock places the iPad Pro’s screen at exactly the right height, even without any angling, for use on my desk.

Unfortunately, due to the limitations of my internet plan, I wasn't able to test out the maximum speeds to see if the Ethernet port was indeed faster than Wi-Fi, but I can say both options topped out my 500Mbps download speeds in various speed tests. The totally wild Kensington StudioDock pushes the iPad Pro far outside its normal tablet window, and that just makes me want Apple to close the gap and turn this thing into the Swiss Army computer it nearly already is. This wasn’t entirely unforeseeable, and I warned of the possibility when reviewing the StudioDock in March because new iPad Pro models did seem overdue. On a PC you can navigate all the folders and all files all the time, no matter if you have internet or not. But the incompatibility is unfortunate for such an expensive product, especially since it was only just released. It comes with a vast array of different plugs, which means you'll be able to find one that works for your region (but sadly also probably means most of them will either sit in a box for years or be thrown away).

Some of the best docking stations around aren’t nearly as expensive, though they don’t offer as many features. Around back there’s a barrel connector for power, three USB-A ports, an HDMI port, and a Gigabit Ethernet port. It’s still slightly fiddly and in a perfect world I’d want the StudioDock to use the Smart Connector, but since no-one other than Apple and Logitech has ever released products that actually do use it, I assume Kensington had its reasons — bandwidth no doubt among them. The Major League Soccer season pass is back for Apple TV, with soccer fans in over 100 countries able to sign up to watch the 2024 season, along with an expansion of Multiview. The StudioDock’s HDMI port supports 4K monitors at 60Hz and should be ideal for iPad dual-display setups, but the software isn’t really there yet on Apple’s part. However, the lack of a user-accessible file system in iOS is a ridiculous deal-breaker for a real computer. While any keyboard will work with StudioDock™, we highly recommend a keyboard that supports iOS, which will allow full use of your shortcut keys.

If you just want to elevate the iPad or use different angles, then a simpler iPad holder for bed or an iPad wall mount might be better for you. The problem is, you need to prop your iPad up to use a Bluetooth keyboard, and the height and angle provided by a regular folio case is rarely optimal. According to ET News, Apple will release the first iPad Pro models with organic light-emitting diodes (OLED) sometime next year.
