After learning of the significance of the Kimber name as children, and my grandmother’s connection, we’d imagine her as a real-life Peaky Blinder. In turn, the name of the range was born. When you find a whiskey inspired by a TV show, what one often expects is an average spirit created just to capitalize on the fans’ interest. But, Peaky Blinder Irish Whiskey is actually a nice dram. It has a fine balance on the palate and you can tell there’s work behind the blend. Sadler’s, an English brewery, has launched a full range of spirits inspired by the Peaky Blinders’ story. Among them, there’s a bourbon and also this Peaky Blinder Irish Whiskey. It is an Irish whiskey finished in Sherry casks and bottled at 40% ABV. The gang grew out of the harsh economic deprivations of working class Britain and was composed largely of young unemployed men. They derived social power from robbery, violence, political influence and the control of gambling. Gang members typically held ‘business’ meetings in local watering holes in and around Birmingham, often over a pint or illegally distilled spirits which were common at the time. Wel is bekend dat ze minimaal 3 jaar oud zijn, anders mag er bij wet niet gesproken worden van whiskey. On the palate, Peaky Blinder Irish whiskey is a fresher whiskey than what you expect from its color. It is quite fruity, with soft banana and peach notes and a touch of orange peel. There are some sweet vanilla notes and a subtle touch of honey, accompanied by light hot chocolate notes and a touch of custard. As a family, we’re known for our spirits, and our beers, but we can’t overlook our links to the original gang members and how in many ways, they too have shaped our brewing and family history.

There’s an even greater connection on my mother’s side of the family. My family tree shows my great, great uncle to be a Billy Kimber, who’s reported to be the biggest organised crime boss the UK has seen. He would have been referred to as a Peaky Blinder at the time, while sitting at the head of the Birmingham Boys gang. The following indicators should be taken as only a guide and not a set of hard and fast rules. Some "premium" whiskeys really are quite terrible, while some mass market products are good enough to pour into a decanter and serve to the Duke of Edinburgh.
