They have only been the Windsors since just before the outbreak of the First World War, when they conveniently changed their German name of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Then we get the dossier on hapless old Air Miles Andy who is beyond belief and beneath contempt, a repulsive and repugnant parasite with connections and/or business dealings with various dictators, Middle Eastern theocracies, Gaddafi, the Bin ladens and of course old Jeffrey Epstein (In Epstein’s incriminating black book, there was no less than 16 different contact numbers for the royal and 18 for his ex-wife). But even Cornwall is on British soil, the Queen's untaxed offshore investments all serve to fatten the exploding coffers of an unelected group of people who sit in the highest office in the land and enjoy a privilege usually reserved for Popes, saviors or Hollywood stars. To a Canadian who has always held a positive if low-key view of Queen Elizabeth II, Norman Baker's exposé of palace finances is a stunning revelation. The British need someone in the twin seats of power that they can relate to and if the powers-that-be fail to read the room and help the people they're meant to be serving I fear for the outcome.

As an aside: I am from Hungary and have the extremely bad luck of being able to boast about "unfailingly supporting" one of the most corrupt governments in Europe (and the world). As compared with Smith’s general argument against the monarchy, Baker probes the nature and character of the royal family. At the 2018 Trooping of the Colour, the Queen was surrounded on the balcony at Buckingham Palace by 44 members of her extended family (many of whom you will not have heard of). For all their foibles and idiosyncrasies, the royal family wield considerable influence – and yet rather than facing the scrutiny their position merits, they enjoy sickeningly obsequious coverage which reports their activities with breathless awe. The royal family is the original Coronation Street – a long running soap opera with the occasional real coronation thrown in.I had no idea how much the Royal family were costing us and was under the impression that they make us lots of money through tourism etc. The majority of honours are of course not allocated by the monarch, but by the PM of the day, but the royal practices established legitimacy for patronage and provided cover for politicians who seek to use and abuse it. Not to mention the great friendship the previous generations held for their first cousins, the German Kaisers and their families, Nazis all. Working royals also tend to have access to ‘grace and favour’ residences and many are also gifted private country homes by the Queen in her private capacity.

Prince Charles now has 31 decorations available to him to wear and even Princess Anne holds 24 military positions. In this book, former government minister Norman Baker argues that the British public deserves better than this puerile diet. In June of this year [2023] there was the release of Abolish the Monarchy: Why We Should and How We Will. Some shocking revelations in this book written by a politician who has access to very many of the activities of members of the royal family. As an example, the relatively short chapter entitled The Royal Free narrates the fact that many members of the extended royal family enjoy almost unlimited access to free holidays, expensive gifts, luxury cars, use of private jets, designer clothes, and other perks of their job and their wide-ranging, and often questionable, personal relationships.

Notes on reading I admit it, I'm very low-brow, I had hoped for a scandalously gossipy book about royal misdemeanours of the behavioural kind. Please note that Sky Garden practices challenge 25 policy, encouraging anyone who is over 18 but looks under 25 to carry acceptable ID (a card bearing the PASS hologram, a photographic driving license or a passport). The Queen presides over a merit-free awards system that maintains a top-down mediaeval hierarchy of court favourites that has existed for 700 years. Kevin Maguire, Daily Mirror 'An important text for anyone who cares about our monarchy and wants to see it reform and evolve to face head on the challenges of the twenty-first century. It is our intent and purpose to foster and encourage in-depth discussion about all things related to books, authors, genres, or publishing in a safe, supportive environment.

To add insult to injury, the beneficiaries of all this taxpayer largesse labour under the mistaken notion that they are superior in every imaginable way to the subservient citizens of the realm. A system based on merit may not sound like a revolutionary concept, but if taken to its logical conclusion, would cut off from future honours those, who would be given them only because of birthright and their place in society, including, of course, members of the royal family. the simple concept and one-word text answers the question on each page – an image showing a bee has the word ‘buzz’, a spider ‘spin’ or centipede ‘wiggle’ and so on through the pages. A serial killer wanders into a house that acts as a time portal from the 1920s to modern day he wanders back and forth through time killing girls that shine out to him and leaving mementos from previous kills at the next scene. Following the 2010 general election, he was appointed Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Transport, then Minister of State for Crime Prevention at the Home Office. In 2002, World of Books Group was founded on an ethos to do good, protect the planet and support charities by enabling more goods to be reused.

All the Royals were for appeasement, until brother Bertie, King George came to the throne, then it was not so much. Although she is not legally obliged to pay tax, she ‘chose’ (under public pressure following the Windsor Castle fire) to start voluntarily paying income and capital gains tax in 1992. Baker has a lot to work with here, from the blatant examples of pro-Nazism from Edward VIII and his American wife (the couple received a gold inscribed wedding gift from Hitler) and the fact that Princess Michael of Kent’s father was a Nazi and fought in WWI against the Allies too, it is almost like shooting fish in a barrel. However, the royals still refuse to face public scrutiny through legal and forensic examination of their affairs (monetary, and otherwise), election to office, and subjection to the laws of the UK in the same way that face the citizens of the nation, including its politicians. The author is extremely negative about the royal family, although he did find some positive things to say about Meghan Markle. Much will depend on how Charles III behaves and what the British public think about him and Camilla in their new roles. We are also offered some very interesting historical explanation on the relationship between the governments and the monarchs, the press and the monarchs and how the family of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha became Windsors during WWI. Here’s the thing … at the start of the twenty first century, the United Kingdom has a hereditary head of state descended from a conqueror who seized the country by military force 954 years ago, an unelected second chamber full of friends of whichever Prime Minister happens to be in power at the time and two thirds of the land is still owned by the descendants of the 200 or so Norman Barons who came over with the aforementioned conqueror in 1066.
