It is a tender, partly rhyming and comfortingly repetitive tale that is easy for children to remember and recite back - it was a real winner with my two. It's always so interesting to read my old reviews -- last time I picked up on some things that I didn't even think about this time around, and vice versa! Encourage your child to tell another member of the family about their memory box and what is inside.

I love the illustrations - I think it's lovely and the paper dolls were drawn exactly to the rhyme/repetition lines, found in the book. This is a Very Good Copy of this Book in a Very Good Dust-Jacket with NO chips or tears to the outer edges of the dust wrapper. We encourage educators to visit the Association for Library Service to Children’s resource guide for talking to children about issues of race and culture in literature. Questions for Philosophical Discussion » Summary The Paper Dolls explores fictional objects, memory, and artistic creation by following a little girl and her paper dolls. The Paper Dolls, a book by Julia Donaldson, follows the story of a young girl who, with the help of her mother, makes paper dolls she names Ticky and Tacky and Jackie the Backie and Jim with two noses and Jo with the bow. I think this is a really positive story, children could have a go at making their own paper characters and the story could develop children's imagination with all the adventures their own paper dolls could have.

They soon escape the clutches of the toy dinosaur and the snapping jaws of the oven-glove crocodile, but then a very real pair of scissors threatens. Getting Dressed for School Paper Dolls Activity - A lovely resource to encourage children to think about the clothes they wear to school. This year, this may be particularly relevant for many children who have experienced losses in many different ways. As a child, she had a happy memory (playing with the dolls) that turned into a sad memory (the dolls were cut into pieces); much later, as an adult, she was able to relive the happy memory by making paper dolls for her own child. It takes the concept of fragility and what happens to the things we love - that sometimes, (every)thing is not ours to keep forever.Design Your Own Potato Character Activity - Develop your kid's imagination by letting them create a new character. Cobb's illustrations are perfect, as she joins one adventure to the next visually, and creates the paper dolls' personalities. The Association of Child Psychotherapists (ACP) is the trading name of the Association of Child Psychotherapists Ltd. Well, the book is simply about a young girl with five paper dolls who then goes on an imaginary adventures with them - until a boy came along and cut the dolls into pieces. The illustrations depict how the children envisage the imaginary worlds and their paper dolls coming to life.

What I do love, however, is how this comes across to the adult and more older reader - there's an ache of longing in reading the spread, and I do think that The Paper Dolls may have some really interesting applications in therapeutic contexts. The children particularly liked seeing the page on the girls memories and some of the creatures that made an appearance in the book.My great niece and grandchildren all thoroughly enjoyed this book: we made a few strings of paper dolls afterwards (had to fold paper in three and do boy/girl for it! Why does it seem to hold some things that are imaginary (like the white mice) and some things that were once real (like the kind granny and the butterfly hairslide)? I think this book is good for children to realise that as long as you create great memories (like she did with her paper dolls), you will never really forget them.

Talk about how the little girl might have felt at different points in the story Share memories; what special things (toys, places, or people) do children remember or which nice things would they like to remember when they grow up? Getting every pupil in your class to complete a paper doll will give you material to create a beautiful display in your classroom to celebrate the similarities and differences between your learners. Concerning the boy: I think the moral of the story is that sometimes bad people hurt us, but we have the power to control our own emotions and turn them into something positive. Children all over the world were invited to make their own paper dolls, and all of them were then laid out on the floor of the ballroom in the Royal Festival Hall. Or, you can ask them to create their own paper dolls, by colouring and drawing the templates as they like.Last time I focused so much on the boy, who came out of nowhere to destroy the girl's prized possession, but this time I understood why he didn't get any come-uppance: this story isn't about him. PBS Kids’ set of resources for talking to young children about race and racism might also be useful for educators. But, at the same time, it seems that the dolls can outlive, in some way, the fact that they were snipped into pieces because they come back together and sing, only this time in the little girl’s memory. The Paper Dolls is the story of a young girl who makes some paper dolls which she plays with and takes them on adventures but one day when a boy cuts them up they end up in her memory instead. Creativity also encourages mental growth and development by providing opportunities for them to try out new ideas and experiment with risks.
