Description

Aura opens on my skin with an intensely sweet-tart fruity accord, along with a tropical green note. The vanilla also starts to manifest from the very beginning, providing an opaque, creamy texture to the fruity accord. The “wolfwood,” described by Mugler as an “animalic” vegetal substitute for wood, is animalic, peaty and opaque. This is no woody base. Instead, the base is a prominent vanilla. It isn’t quite gourmand, but a little powdery. It reminds me of the vanilla in the first Alien Goddess release, but less boring. This is a scent you can dislike, but admire for its rebel yell. It eschews the mass-appealing designer template, with its quirky, niche personality. It’s a designer house willing to die on a hill for “the principal of the matter.” I got a sample of this today and I'm honestly not sure. it's a quality fragrance, of that there is no doubt, but I find it a little unsettling. It makes me feel uneasy, and that could be a good thing or a bad thing. It's certainly intriguing.

This perfume is exuberant, fresh, strong, unapologetic, and, dare I say, a bit of a hodge-podge in the best possible taste. Second time trying it on.. First sniff is cute, sweet, endearing (alas still too intense I can't). Then it dried down to faint vanilla on my skin that was so boring and dull. I don't know what happened, where is my cloud of concentrated flower romance? I thought that was the end of that perfume. I went on about my day anyway. Then...a few more hours go by and.. Poof! A purply pink cloud with sparkles appeared, then faded away. That's THE smell that I smelled the first time! What. A. Tease! This intoxicatingly sweet and addictive smell is playing hide and seek with me. Then the dry down... It's headachey, and green. The green I get is pine which is unfortunate because I am really not a pine lover. My grandad used to wear Coty - Aspen and this reminds me so much of him and their house. Which isn't a bad memory, but I much preferred his old spice Eau Sensuelle is perfect for the heat. It's tropical green with a bright white floral boost and an underlying vanilla vibe that doesn't take away at all from the tropical feel. It's summer vanilla done right! When it was released, it was a perfume that I didn't like. In fact, I never bought it and opted for the Sensuelle version, which was easier to wear in my opinion. A long time later, a sample of a dupe of this fragrance fell into my hands and I found it amazing, it completely conquered me. So I had to start the hunt of this discontinued perfume. And I got at a very good price, a 30 ml size without a box that was missing about 8 ml. I told myself that to have the opportunity to confirm if I really liked the perfume (you never know how successful a dupe can be) and to include a few ml in the collection this was enough. After using it twice I had to look for a replacement and now I have a 90 ml bottle that will allow me to use up the small one without worries. After not liking it at the beginning, Aura has become one of the very few perfumes that I have a replacement for. This one is a bit complex to describe, and it may smell overwhelming at times. It's different, but reminds me of the general vein of "Alien", so, it's not bizarre this one came from the same fashion house.

By the time I walked from the store to my car... I was already beginning to realize the consequences of my little blind-spray experiment. Perhaps I should have drawn some conclusions about the juice from the color of the bottle. (I try not to judge a book by its cover, but maybe I should have suspected that the color green might signify something in this case.) What I experienced was... mentholated, to say the least. It's so addicting to smell it! At times it smells the way root beer tastes, other times it's a fresh powdery scent, and at the same time it has a camphoraceous menthol scent. In the initial spray it does have a citrus element that stings the nose with the alcohol and a tart sweetness like tart chalky candy (Sweetarts) but it goes away and becomes way softer. It doesn't really smell feminine to me but it does have a sweetness to it so it might not be exactly masculine either. I asked a few coworkers to smell it and one said it smelled like barbershop to her. I guess that kind of confirmed my belief that it seemed more masculine. I spray this on my pillows and some puff balls I had hanging in my car; I can't get enough of the scent! I am disappointed that the scent does not last long and dies down immediately and the sillage is very poor.... Maybe that's a good thing because other people might not like the way it smells. My boyfriend was okay with it it but it wasn't anything that was going to make him swoon. On my skin it dries down to a mild powdery vanilla or marshmallow scent and the root beer scent goes away. On clothes and pillows, the camphor / menthol scent is still there and sometimes smells like a very sugary spearmint chewing gum.....or maybe it smells the way the purple "Violet Flavor" Canel's gum tastes-- or maybe it was Chiclets grape flavor gum I am thinking of. When it really dies down, the scent reminds me of Matrix Biolage's "Blue Agave" Smoothing Shine Milk, but the milk has a tiny hint of coconut. Biolage has good smelling shampoos and conditioners; they have soothing scents. Their products don't have the camphor / menthol scent so if you want to experience the soothing green scent with the creamy vanilla, try Matrix Biolage's hair products. Of all the Mugler line, Aura Eau de Parfum Sensuelle is one of the easier fragrances to wear. Despite its strong projection, I find this flanker a lot easier to fathom and the composition a lot less quirky than the original Aura. If I were to chose between the two, I would definitely choose Aura Eau de Parfum Sensuelle. Final Facet, a touch of musk and sandalwood. Soft, sensual and beguiling Sandalwood. As a sandalwood freak/addict, this is my favorite facet.

Because of this creamy texture and intense sweetness, I don't recognise it as rhubarb like in Hermès Rhubarbe Ecarlate, which is much more juicy, more sparkling and natural-smelling. In fact, the creamy fruitiness combined with the tropical, ripe greenness briefly evokes green banana in my head. There was a sweet smell from all the elements sun, water, flowers merging and Integrating that this perfume truly captures. There is definitely a tcp / germoline / deep-heat muscle relaxant cream vibe going on. It's kind of like you sprayed perfume over some antiseptic cream. Aura Eau de Parfum Sensuelle is a much softer and a less harsh take on the original. It smells almost fresh and 'fizzy' to my nose, like the scent of a Lifesavers hard candy. You could class it as a gourmand-floral, as it has an 'edible' kind of an aroma.

It delivers sweet, green, aromatic, indolic floral, spicy, aquatic, powdery/ sunscreen/ cosmetic, and balsamic tones, all together. I'm quite surprised at how much I like it, though I think I underestimate just how sugary my own personality is.Sigh, why can't fragrances I love perform this outstanding? Come to think of it, that reminds me of some people as well, lol. I heard this was available where I live in Canada (The Bay), so of course I had to rush out to try it. The guts it took for a designer house to release this commands enormous respect. It took a while for people to appreciate it. I think many of us lament the fact that we didn’t understand it, until it was gone. I'm glad I bought a 100 ml refill bottle 3 years ago. As they did with Womanity I'm pretty sure they will change the formula to become more ... crowd friendly. Hence a spark of genius will be gone and that will smell like other perfumes more or less.

I've just tested Mugler Aura at Charles de Gaulle Airport. Unlike the much-maligned Chanel Gabrielle or the unremarkable Mon Guerlain, this is a long-awaited pillar that does NOT care about pleasing everyone and their momma. Mugler doesn't play safe, and thank god for that. Having said that, I'm pretty certain that Aura is not going to become an uber-popular, ubiquitous scent like Angel and Alien: it's more akin to Womanity, because it is rather ambivalent and polarising. I loved the comment from yesterday_borscht “This is the same Aura, but friendly to people from La vie est belle gang” because it’s the most accurate to my experience.

The original Aura EDP is unique, quirky and often loud. I enjoyed smelling the original Aura, however, I couldn't wear it for long periods. Aura Eau de Parfum Sensuelle is perfectly balanced to my nose and is my favourite Aura flanker to date. So, I've sprayed it on today and a little definitely goes a long way. It is a very sweet perfume so overdoing it can be quite ghastly for others around you. As for the medicinal note that people have been pointing out, it smells a bit like a Chinese licorice root (often used in TCM) but I could just be imagining that...
