The actual difference between lenses can be obvious when compared side by side with another lens, but likely as not when viewed in isolation will look perfectly satisfactory. legacy prime 35mm film lenses on auction sites now - and by the time you have added a M43 adapter - this lens can seem a relative bargain!

For reference the lens is quite reasonably sharp in the center wide open (60 lp/mm) and only gets modestly sharper by F/5. Longitudinal CA (LoCA) – or purple and green fringing manifesting in front of and behind the plane of focus – can be fairly noticeable wide open and is hard to manually correct for.I suppose it can blur backgrounds better, but then again the FL is not what I would use for blurring. I tested indoors with Olympus stabilizer on, different shutter speed (1/20 to 1/640), different ISO. aperture encourages handheld shooting without a flash in dimly-lit environments and allows the true atmosphere of a scene to be captured in crisp, clear detail. Nowadays, most fixed lens cameras come with a 35mm or even 28mm because they are more interesting and flexible and can replace the 50mm, given the high resolution and hence croppability of the modern images. Together with the 25mm focal distance (35mm camera equivalent: 50mm), which is nearly the same viewing angle and sense of perspective as the human eye, this lens is ideal for both portraits and scenery as you would like for them to be seen – with a clear subject and outstanding colour rendering.

So it's better to crank your shutter speed in bright light, rather than go beyond those apertures, if possible.More recent MFT sensor tech can claw back some IQ dignity when compared to even older full frame cameras. The discs rendered by out-of-focus highlights are relatively Gaussian and free of distracting patterns like 'onion rings'. The first was taken with the full frame Canon 1Ds Mark II at ISO 3200 and the second taken with the MFT PEN-F at ISO 5000. Lens construction consists ofeight elements in seven groups, including two aspherical lenses to reduce chromatic and spherical aberrations for increased sharpness and clarity. This is a very good level of performance overall, and images should be bright, sharp and attractive throughout the range.

The only real drawback is the susceptibility to flare, which is very evident in shots taken into the light. Ultra-high refractive index (UHR) lenses improve optical performance, reduce size and weight, and achiev uniform image quality from the center to the edges of the image. is about as bright as you're gonna get for a lightweight prime on M4/3 (with the exception of the PL25/1. It’s not quite as compact as the Olympus 25mm, but I doubt many will complain about the size unless they are looking for a combination to slip into a jacket pocket. This week, the World Photography Organization announced the shortlist for Student and Youth Photographer of The Year, part of the broader Sony World Photography Awards of 2024.I am pretty sure the offer of the kit 50mm lens was based on minimum costs associated with designing a lens that had to conform with the flange distance dictated by the mirror box presence behind the mount - to offer a wider kit lens they would have to use a more expensive retro focus design hence the universal 50mm kit offer.

We tested it with a Panasonic G9 and found the touchscreen makes it painless to move focus smoothly and silently, with just the tap of a finger. The much reported issue with focus shift when stopped down does not appear to me to be any kind of problem in varied use. It achieves an attractive and smooth out-of-focus effect when working with shallow depth of field due to the rounded seven-blade diaphragm. So if you’d normally use f/8 on full frame, the rule of thumb is to shoot at f/4 on Micro Four Thirds. Late in the fall, Panasonic released what was a bit of a surprise to many: a slower 50mm equivalent lens in the 25mm f/1.To find out more about the cookies we use or how to change your settings, please see our Cookies Policy. The Sony a9 III is the world's first full-frame mirrorless camera to feature a global electronic shutter with simultaneous readout. Collectively, the arrangements of these lens elements ensure image sharpness and clarity is consistent. The average numbers at f/4 are slightly lower than the first version of this article, which reported only one copy, but the difference is not really significant.
