Cactus potting soil is specially formulated to have an open, free-draining texture, with a low proportion of organic matter, to keep fertility low. While we can't control the unpredictable journey of seed life, we're here for the fun, not the science! There is nothing better tasting than your own cooked food using garnish flavourings that you have grown yourself. When this happens, start giving your cactus a chance to breathe by removing the transparent cover during the day.

Whilst growing one of these trees from seed can be challenging, nurturing your Bonsai from seed is incredibly rewarding. Insert the cutting into a mix of 2 parts John Innes No 1 compost and 1 part horticultural grit by volume. Sow seeds in spring into pots or small trays of John Innes No 1 compost with added grit or sharp sand. Instead of keeping the repotted cactus in a location where it receives a good amount of sunlight, try keeping it in a shaded or partially-shaded area until its roots re-establish. While you can get away with a little more watering if you have a tropical cactus, you should still wait until the soil dries out before each new watering.
