From here, the walk starts to be a little more strenuous as you head up to the summit of Gowbarrow Fell. When he published his first book it was privately, as he could not face the prospect of finding a publisher. 9. Holme Fell (317m)

Wainwrights are the 214 English peaks (known locally as fells) described in Alfred Wainwright's seven-volume Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells (1955–66). They all lie within the boundary of the Lake District National Park in Cumbria, and all but one (Castle Crag) are over 1,000 feet (304.8m) in height. [a] Over two million copies of the Pictorial Guides have been sold since their publication. [1] In 1974, Wainwright published a supplementary volume The Outlying Fells of Lakeland (1974), which includes another 116 summits (described in 56 walks); these are the Wainwright Outlying Fells. Great Mell Fell is one of the smallest of the 214 Wainwright fells in the Lake District. It is an outlier in many respects, along with its twin Little Mell Fell. In fact, if Great Mell Fell wasn’t included in Wainwright’s guide to the Lakeland Fells, it may not be climbed so often at all.

The Outlying Fells of Lakeland (an idea he had previously rejected), published in 1974, was his last major guidebook. Thereafter he concentrated on sketchbooks of larger-size line drawings until his eyesight began to fail in the mid-1980s. His Ex-Fellwanderer, an autobiographical work published in 1987, was intended to be his last written work, but he continued to lend his name and some written commentary to a series of " coffee table books" featuring the photography of Derry Brabbs.

And there’s plenty more to the terrain for you to explore. You can climb this small fell, only 469m, from either Great Langdale or Little Langdale. Either way you are greeted by ‘The Great Wall of Lingmoor’ at the summit, as well as a glimpse of the surrounding fells, which as always make for good viewing.
