The wheel itself is very nice - it's my first Direct Drive wheel and it feels great and has enough power for being attached to a desk. This MOZA Racing bundle offers a direct drive wheel base, a steering wheel and pedals all in one affordable kit.

This three-pedal set is made from CNC machined aluminum alloy, and features a load-cell brake and a three-stage clutch pedal. This brake is very linear and the feel doesn’t vary with the throw which makes it very difficult to modulate the brakes. Also, a slightly confusing design choice is to have three buttons that are all labelled pretty much the same thing.

It features a simple action to remove and re-attach any Moza wheel, allowing for you to upgrade this steering wheel or interchange them in just a few seconds. It would give you more clarity and definition over kerbs, as there were definitely points during gameplay where, while things were definitely feeling perfectly usable, the anticipated feedback felt a little muddy.

Both robust and foam padded to high-heaven, the R5 base screws directly onto it, and it’s not going anywhere. It’s possible and you’ll still get decent force feedback in some sims and scenarios but it does struggle to get a larger wheel with a heavy button plate moving in an agile fashion.

With this installed, the brake pedal is much more usable, but the fact it’s an after-the-fact thought and purchase definitely puts a tick in the ‘Negatives’ column for the R5 Simulator. The only thing I’d change is that I’d make is an entirely round steering wheel instead of a D-shaped wheel. The direct drive force feedback is without a doubt a step up in both strength and fidelity compared to gear or belt-driven wheels such as the Logitech G923 or Thrustmaster T248. Each pedal is adjustable for fit and travel, as well as sporting additional springs and damping blocks for ideal feel. Compatibility across sims varies quite a bit so I cannot say with certainty that these dash layouts will satisfy your needs.In the future, the Moza ecosystem will take this into account, so that the steering wheels and the base can be adapted to each other. There’s six programmable buttons, two joysticks and two rotary encoders, as well as a ten-LED shift indicator. We got in touch with MOZA and they were kind enough to send across a replacement unit, so a huge thank you to them for that! This allows sim racers who maybe don’t have a wheel stand or full sim rig setup, to quickly attach this wheel base to your desk, or a table and start racing. This hasn’t been confirmed yet, but I have a sneaky suspicion that this may well be announced at a later date. And finally, there is a table clamp included, which really points to this being a more casual sim racing product.
